STU Shines on Global Stage, Secures 5th Place in Russia at International Competition Featuring Over 2,100 Students

Sunyani Technical University secures 5th place at the 2026 International Transport Project Competition in Moscow, showcasing Ghanaian engineering talent and technological innovation on the global stage.

Sunyani Technical University (STU) has once again demonstrated its growing strength in engineering education, research and technological innovation after securing an impressive fifth position at the 2026 International Transport Project Competition held in Moscow, Russia.

The international competition, organised by the Russian University of Transport (RUT/MIIT), took place from October 28 to 30, 2026, bringing together promising engineering and technology talents to develop innovative solutions to real-world transportation challenges.

The competition initially attracted more than 700 teams comprising over 2,100 students, making STU's achievement a significant milestone for the University and Ghana's technical education sector.

Representing Ghana and Sunyani Technical University was a three-member team known as Transport Think Tank, comprising David Akampae, Evans Anurika and Priscilla Adwoa Yeli, under the coordination of Dr. Stephen Agyeman, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering.

STU Emerges Among the Best

STU initially entered three teams in three different competition categories: Charging Electric Vehicles in Megacities, Transport Control in the Event of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Failure, and Marine Drone Identification Systems.

The University's Transport Think Tank distinguished itself during the preliminary stage by topping the Marine Drone Identification System category, earning a place among the 30 teams selected to participate in the international finals in Moscow.

Building on this achievement, the team proceeded to the finals, where it secured fifth place, further demonstrating the University's ability to compete with engineering talents on the international stage.

The achievement highlights the technical competence, creativity, problem-solving abilities and innovative potential of students trained at Sunyani Technical University.

Innovative Technology to Address Global Maritime Challenges

At the heart of STU's success was an innovative project titled Global Marine Drone Registration and Identification System (GMDRIS).

The project proposes a technological framework to address challenges associated with identifying, registering, monitoring and verifying autonomous marine drones operating across international maritime boundaries.

With the growing application of autonomous technologies in maritime transportation and underwater operations, the need for effective identification, accountability and international coordination has become increasingly important.

The STU team proposed an integrated system incorporating unique drone identification, registration mechanisms, interoperable communication technologies, monitoring systems and smart-buoy relay infrastructure for selected underwater applications.

The proposed innovation seeks to improve maritime safety, strengthen accountability and facilitate coordination among maritime authorities across national boundaries.

During the competition finals in Russia, the team further refined its concept, developed a prototype and presented its proposed solution before expert assessors, responding to technical questions and demonstrating its understanding of the engineering challenge.

Taking Ghanaian Technical Education to the World

Beyond the fifth-place finish, STU's participation provided the students with valuable international exposure, technical experience and opportunities to engage with other innovative minds.

The competition challenged participants to work under demanding conditions, including limited preparation time, technical communication barriers and the need to refine their solutions within a competitive international environment.

Despite these challenges, the students demonstrated resilience, teamwork, adaptability and technical competence throughout the competition.

Their performance reinforces the importance of practical, industry-oriented education and the role of technical universities in developing innovative solutions to complex global challenges.

For Sunyani Technical University, the achievement represents another significant step towards strengthening its international visibility and positioning itself as an institution committed to excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and applied research.

University Management Commended for Support

The team acknowledged the Vice-Chancellor of Sunyani Technical University and University Management for their support towards its participation in the international competition.

Appreciation was also extended to the University's International Relations and Institutional Linkages (IRIL) Directorate, the Faculty of Engineering, supervisors, engineers and other individuals whose contributions facilitated the team's participation.

Special recognition was given to Dr. Stephen Agyeman, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, for coordinating and guiding the students throughout the competition.

The Russian University of Transport, competition supervisors and translators were equally acknowledged for providing the international platform and technical assistance.

A New Chapter for Innovation at STU

The University's impressive performance in Moscow provides a strong foundation for further research, innovation and international collaboration.

The Transport Think Tank intends to build on its experience by exploring additional technical feasibility studies, testing communication and identification technologies, and engaging relevant maritime stakeholders towards further development of its proposed system.

The achievement also underscores the need for sustained investment in student innovation, technical mentorship, research development and participation in international competitions.

For Sunyani Technical University, finishing fifth on the international stage is more than a competition result. It is a powerful demonstration that engineering talent developed in Ghana can contribute meaningful ideas and compete in addressing global technological challenges.

From Sunyani in Ghana's Bono Region to Moscow, Russia, STU's Transport Think Tank has demonstrated the potential of Ghanaian technical education, bringing international recognition to the University and making a proud contribution to Ghana's growing innovation story.
