The Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen KorKor II, has directed the relocation of the waste dumping site situated near the GETFund Hostel area in Sunyani following a high-level meeting with officials from Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), and the Sunyani Technical University (STU).
The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including:
Dr. Jackson Adiyiah Nyantakyi, Bono Regional Director, EPA
Madam Monica Benewaa, Human Resource Manager, EPA
Mr. Clement Adusei, Technical Officer, EPA
Mr. Benedict Awuah, Regional Coordinator, Zoomlion
Mr. Patrick Entiful, Waste Landfill Manager, Zoomlion
Mr Amankwatia, Estate Officer, STU
During the discussions, Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen KorKor II expressed deep concern about the environmental and health risks posed by maintaining a refuse site in proximity to schools, hospitals, hostels, and residential homes. He described the situation as unacceptable and detrimental to public welfare.
The Sunyanimanhene, therefore, ordered Zoomlion Ghana Limited to relocate the refuse site to Nwanwasua, an area previously designated for waste disposal. He issued a deadline of December 31, 2025, for relocation and instructed that the existing site be cleared and thoroughly cleaned immediately after the move.
Odeefour further highlighted the cultural and traditional importance of the Sunyani River, which lies near the current dump site. He emphasized that the river, often used for purification and traditional rites, must be protected from pollution at all costs.
The Omanhene tasked the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) with monitoring and supervising the relocation and cleanup process to ensure full compliance with environmental regulations.
Stakeholders present at the meeting pledged their commitment to carry out the directive effectively and within the stipulated timeframe, assuring the traditional authority of their full cooperation in safeguarding the environment and public health.
